These pair of Royal Doulton Orientalist porcelain figurines are both signed and have hallmarks. One of them shows a cobbler with shoes in his hands and the other one shows a potter painting a jar.

This is a figurine made by Eugenio Pattarino of Italy in the 20th century. He was a famous artist who was born in 1885 and died in 1971 and achieved International fame in his career for his terracotta sculptures, many subjects taken from religious themes as well as the Comedia del arte. The Vatican thought so highly of his work that they made a gift of his pieces to visiting dignitaries. Since his workshop in Florence got washed away a few years ago the pieces have become extremely sought after. This piece is of a Mongolian warrior (Genghis Khan like) mounted on a charging horse. The sculpture shows superb detail in modelling and painting as is the norm for Pattariona’s pieces. The horse is draped in ceremonial robes and harness, and the warrior is resplendent in their battle armor, as if they are executing a dress rehearsal for an elaborate play. The entire figure is 13 inches (33cm) tall, 6.5 inches (16.5cm) wide and about 16 inches (40.6cm) long so quite large. Amazingly it is in very good condition especially since these are so fragile! There are two tiny chips to the bottom edge and two pieces of the drapes on the horses front have been reglued (I show them broken off in the last picture before I reglued them). They are small and underneath the front so not visible at all and even if you look they aren’t easy to find from underneath. Marked underneath with his initials (EPF) as well as Italy.

This is a super coffee or tea set made by Rue de la Pierre-Levee in about 1870. It is handpainted with scenes in the Watteau style and a super trim with raised gilding. There are six cups and saucers, a pot with lid, a creamer and a sugar bowl with a lid. They are all handpainted with different scenes and flowers and a green trim with raised gilding. Excellent detail and quality. The set is in great condition with the spout of the coffee pot restored as well as the rose finial on the lid. One saucer has a tiny spot on the rim restored very well. No other damage at all. All pieces are marked with the blue crossed swords mark with the letters C above and E below. The pot is 6.75 inches (17.1cm) tall, 4.25 inches (10.8cm) wide and 4.75 inches (12cm) deep including the handle and spout. The cups are 2.5 inches (6.3cm) tall and just under 2.5 inches (6.3cm) in diameter. The saucers are 1.125 inches (2.8cm) tall and 5 inches (12.7cm) in diameter. The creamer is 4.25 inches (10.8cm) tall, 3 inches (7.6cm) wide and 3.5 inches (8.9cm) deep including the handle and the sugar is 4.25 inches (10.8cm) tall and 3.25 inches (8.2cm) in diameter.

This is a rare pair of figural candlesticks made by Vieux Paris in about 1820. It is quite rare to find a pair of this quality and condition. There is a make version who has a sword by his side, a hunting horn in the front and a hat with a long feather. The female version has some keys and a spindle type thing. Both are holding an urn on their shoulders and my favorite part is that they have lids in the candleholders that look like flower arrangements. They are in surprisingly good condition as French gilding wears quite easily. Very little wear to that, there are a few chips to the flowers on the lids but they are not distracting, he has a very good restoration to a small part of his candleholder and she has the bottom of her sash broken off. None of these issues are very apparent and definitely do not take away from them. The figurines are not marked underneath but that is the norm for this maker. They are 13 inches (33cm) tall and the base diameter is about 5 inches (12.7cm).

This is a large potpourri lidded dish made by Worcester in about the mid to later 19th century during the Grainger period. The bottom part is a nicely gilded triangular base on which three griffins are holding up a round bowl. Lots of superb relief detail and gold highlights. The lid has diamond and round shaped holes in it as well as a central larger hole all highlighted with gilding. The set is in perfect condition with almost no wear to the gilding. The set is 5 inches (12.7cm) tall and 8 inches (20.3cm) in diameter. It is sadly unmarked which is not too uncommon during this period but unmistakably Worcester from the Grainger period.

This is a fine pair of heart-shaped dessert dishes, part of the service made for the Prince of Wales at the Derby factory, circa 1788. The cobalt blue border, gilded with a palmetto design, surrounds the familiar motif of the Prince of Wales’s feathers, which is the heraldic badge of the office. It consists of three white feathers behind a gold coronet. A ribbon below the coronet bears the motto Ich Dien (German for “I serve,” a contraction of “Ich diene”). The image is thought to have originated with Edward the Black Prince, ruler of Wales. According to legend, the Black Prince obtained the arms from the blind John I of Bohemia, against whom he fought in the Battle of Crécy in 1346. After the battle, the prince went to the body of the dead king (whom he admired for his bravery) and took his helmet, lined with ostrich feathers. The feathers and the dead king’s motto made up the prince’s new badge and came to be used by subsequent Princes of Wales.

The Prince of Wales for whom these dishes were made, later George IV, was known for his extravagant lifestyle and sexual excesses. His amorous nature was highly controversial. As Prince Regent, he had many mistresses until he secretly married Maria, a Catholic. His father George III had the marriage dissolved and the prince again turned to mistresses until he submitted to his father’s wishes by marrying Caroline. The couple detested each other and their marriage was barely intact when their daughter was born in 1796. Caroline took the child and moved to Italy, returning to England when George succeeded his father, and then only to claim the rights of queen. George managed to have her barred from his coronation, denying her the queenship.

George was an enigma: bright, witty and able on the one hand, but indolent, spoiled and lazy on the other. The Duke of Wellington described him: “He was the most extraordinary compound of talent, wit, buffoonery, obstinacy and good feelings, in short, a medley of the most opposite qualities, with a great preponderance of good, that I ever saw in any character in my life.”

One would hope that the next owner of this splendid pair will not imitate the dissolute king, at least in such a public fashion.

These dishes measure 10 inches (25.4cm) across and are, of course, one of the premier commissions of the Derby factory. They are identified in puce by the factory mark on the back. No chips or repairs. Slight staining and gilt wear.

This is a pair of candlesticks made by Derby around 1830. They are a nice size pair and very well decorated with applied colorful flowers and lots of nice gold trim. Lots of neat little details on these and no expense was spared to make this pair. It is hard to believe they have been around for almost 200 years. They are in great condition with the some damage to the flowers and a little bit of gold wear. A nibble or two to the feet but all in all much better than I would expect a set with this kind of decoration to look after all this time. They are 9.25 inches (23.5cm) tall and the base is 5 inches (12.7cm) in diameter. Both are marked underneath the base the red fancy crown over the letter. They have some good weight to them so no worries about falling over.

This is a porcelain plaque of a handpainted Watteau style scene most likely made in Germany. It is rare to find one of this style and size. It is extremely well painted with nice colors and detail. The frame seems to be brand new and the matte is a greenish velvet kind that is one of the more expensive ones you can find. So no expense was spared to make this piece look superb. I never did open the back to see if there is a mark and don’t see much of a point in that. The piece is in perfect condition. The porcelain part that shows is 8 inches (20.3cm) tall and 9.25 inches (23.5cm) wide. The frame is 13 inches (33cm) tall, 14.25 inches (36.2cm) wide and 1 inch (2.5cm) thick.

This is a figurine made by the Schwarzburger Werkstaetten around 1936 when he was first designed. That means he is one of the rare original pieces. And also a very typical figurine for them in the style and coloration of the Art Nouveau period. It is a blackmoor holding a cake in front of him. He is wearing a turban and is handpainted with a neat design in black, purple and gold. The piece is in great condition with the stem of the pear on top of the cake missing but the leaves are there and it is not easy to spot. The piece is the larger version being 11.5 inches (29.2cm) tall, 3 inches (7.6cm) wide and 6.75 inches (17.1cm) long. He is marked with the impressed fox mark as well as U 182 underneath. Also the impressed stamp (be it lightly) stating Schwarzburger Werkstaetten fuer Porzellankunst. On the side of the base we find the artist name impressed – H. Meisel.

This is a figurine made by Nymphenburg in the 20th century. It is of an oriental dancer dressed in a turban with a funny looking dress a bit like a court jester. Might be a blackamoor as well from the look of the facial features. It is marked underneath with the impressed shield mark, numbers 2056, letter P as well as the green shield mark. It is an interesting model I have not seen before. The piece is in perfect condition. It is 6.25 inches (15.8cm) tall, 3.5 inches (8.9cm) wide, 2.125 inches (5.4cm) wide and 3.5 inches (8.9cm) deep.

This is a rare coffee set designed by Melchior and dating to about 1820. Even though I show only one cup & saucer in the pic there are four cups and saucers as well as the sugar, creamer and coffee pot as part of the set. Handpainted on an orangy beige background with gold stars and figural handles and spouts. Marked with the impressed shield mark of around 1820 as well as various incised marks. The set is in super condition. Sugar lid is missing, tiny restoration to spout of pot that can not be seen with the naked eye, one hairline crack to a saucer, and the finial on the lid of the coffee pot is reglued. The cups are 3 inches (7.6cm) tall and 3 inches (7.6cm) in diameter, the saucers are 1 inch (2.5cm) tall and a bit over 5 inches (12.7cm) in diameter, the creamer is 6.5 inches (16.5cm) tall and 3.5 inches (8.9cm) in diameter, the sugar is 4.25 inches (10.8cm) tall and 5 inches (12.7cm) in diameter and the coffee pot is 9.5 inches (24.1cm) tall and 4.5 (11.4cm) inches in diameter. None of these measurements include the handles or spouts! This is a very rare set to find and in super condition.

This is an umbrella handle made by Meissen in the 19th century. It is handpainted with a floral arrangement with fancy gilding around it on a cobalt blue background. The handle is attached to a wooden stick with a fancy piece of silver. The amazing thing is that this entire piece is in perfect condition. It was probably only used very few times as can be seen by the very tip of the piece. Slightly dented from use on the tip. A spot of paint chipping to two spots of the grey wooden piece. The umbrella handle is probably marked inside or where the silver sleeve attaches but it is on tight and I don’t intend to mess with it. Obviously Meissen as one can see from the painting. The handle is 2.875 inches (7.3cm) long, 1.5 inches (3.8cm) tall to where the silver is attached and 0.75 inches (1.9cm) wide The entire piece is 35.5 inches (90.1cm) long and the umbrella has a diameter of 33 inches (83.8cm) (approximately) and is marked Paragon S.Fox & Co Limited.

This is a rare tete a tete mady by Meissen around 1820. It is handpainted with large Watteau style scenes and a yellow ground with very fancy gold trim. The Watteau scenes are of superb quality and especially the one on the tray is huge and very detailed and uses great colors. The scenes depict different people doing different things. Some are smoking, some are drinking coffee and some are just hanging out with their lady or gentleman. All pieces are in great condition with very little wear to the gilding. Some of the rims especially the teapot have pockmarks where the paste is uneven and a spot missing but it’s all gilded over and from the making. Might be why most of the pieces are second quality. The creamer has a tiny 1/4 inch (0.6cm) firing crack to a rim. All pieces are marked with the underglaze blue crossed swords mark underneath (the bottom of tray is unglazed) and some impressed numbers like 2,5,8 and 73 depending on the piece. The tray has incised numbers 8 and 61 underneath. The lid inside is marked with a black 92. and the bottom of the saucer I believe with faint ghost marks like an M and IIII might have been painters marks. The cups are 2.75 inches (7cm) tall and the same in diameter. The saucers are 5.625 inches (14.2cm) in diameter and 1.25 inches (3.1cm) tall. The creamer is 3.75 inches (9.5cm) tall and 3.625 inches (9.2cm) diameter. The teapot is 5.5 inches (13.9cm) tall and 4.5 inches (11.4cm) diameter and the tray is 17 inches (43.1cm) wide, 12 inches (30.5cm) deep and 1 inch (2.5) tall. This is a very rare set to find and in super condition. There is no sugar pot or any other piece and it doesn’t look like there ever was as the space on the tray is filled up nicely.

This is a seagull made by Meissen in the 20th century. It is one of my favorite bird they made and I don’t think they ever made a painted version or at least I have never seen one. It is a first quality piece which is also hard to find. Most are seconds or worse. The seagull is modelled with its wings spread sitting on top of a foaming wave. The piece sits on top of a wooden black base which makes it look even better. Hard to photograph this one! The figurine is in super condition. The bird is marked in the back of the base with the underglazed blue crossed swords mark and I am sure there are some incised and impressed numbers underneath but I didn’t take the wooden base off to look. The whole piece is 17 inches (43cm) tall, 10 inches (25cm) wide and about 6.5 inches (16.5cm) deep.

This is a rare cane handle made by KPM around 1780. It is of a veiled lady’s head with the body making the shape of the handle. The body has a raised design that is highlighted in puce and gold and the rest is decorated with flower arrangements and small flowers. The neat thing is that the top part of the original cane is still attached to it. Carved with a nice design. There is a metal sleeve holding the wood and the porcelain together and it is still very tight and doesn’t budge. The piece is in perfect condition with a tiny bit of enamel wear to the high points of the veil. The porcelain part is 3 inches (7.5cm) tall, 4.5 inches (11.5cm) long and 1.25 inches (3.1cm) wide. No mark can be seen but it is certainly made by KPM.

 This is a rare set of six plates handpainted with very nice bird scenes made by Fuerstenberg in the 18th century. There is a different bird on each one sitting on a tree with small flowers and bugs around it. Typical Fuerstenberg reticulates rim. These plates are in superb condition and are all marked with Fuerstenberg crossed swords and star mark they used to fake Meissen pieces. This mark is well known to be used by around 1790. The plates are 1.25 inches (3.1cm) tall and 9.5 inches (24cm) in diameter so a nice size.
